Shamica Tucker: Busting Myths About Affordable Housing in Newton County - Episode 20

Welcome back to another insightful episode of The Town Square Podcast, hosted by Gabriel Stovall and Trey Bailey. In Episode 20, we sit down with the dynamic and passionate Shamica Tucker, the Executive Director of the Covington Housing Authority. This conversation is one you won’t want to miss as we unpack the true role of the Housing Authority in our community and explore its impact on affordable housing in Newton County.

Throughout the episode, Shamica breaks down misconceptions about the Housing Authority, explaining why it’s far more than just "government housing" or "the projects" as many people believe. We take a deeper dive into her day-to-day responsibilities and the challenges she faces as the leader of an organization that works tirelessly to provide safe, affordable housing to families who meet the qualifications.

But this conversation isn’t all about housing – Shamica also gives us a glimpse into her life outside the office. As a resident of Porterdale, she’s developed quite the green thumb in recent years, and we have a fun discussion about her gardening adventures, her latest harvest, and her plans for the future.

When the conversation turns to her role at the Housing Authority, Shamica's passion for her work really shines through. She passionately advocates for the importance of providing affordable housing for all in our community and dispels many common myths, including the notion that increasing government-subsidized housing only brings more poverty. She shares surprising statistics on how many Housing Authority residents are employed full-time and how few rely on food stamps, challenging long-held stereotypes about low-income housing.

Additionally, Shamica opens up about the potential developments in the Alcovy Community and the Housing Authority’s efforts to combat the effects of "concentrated poverty" in certain areas of Newton County. But this isn't the only community under the Covington Housing Authority, there are several others: New Leaf Apartments, Holmes Court, Fowler Court, and the Taylor/Jackson Community. Her discussion on this issue is both enlightening and inspiring, with several heart-warming success stories that demonstrate the positive impact of affordable housing initiatives.

As always, Gabriel and Trey bring their engaging, thought-provoking questions, making this episode not only informative but also enjoyable.
